Drilling fluids perform various functions. They lubricate the drill bit, remove cuttings and provide a barrier for well control. However, inhalation of vapors or skin contact can cause serious health problems. Drilling fluids can contain any mixture of hundreds of chemicals. Since each combination can be different, workers may not be aware of the conditions they are exposed to.
